Coaches
Welcome to the Coaches' Area
Becoming a volunteer coach for the Mill Valley Soccer Club is kind of like being God. Okay, it's not quite that good ... but you do get to do good works, sculpt young humans both physically and mentally, see the triumphs and tribulations of your efforts, and you (usually) get Sundays off.
All kidding aside, without volunteer coaches our club wouldn't have a recreational soccer program, and without a recreational program we probably wouldn't be a club at all. And that, judging by the beautiful weather and fields in Mill Valley, would be a terrible shame. So consider volunteering. Ask around in the community and you'll be sure to encounter parents that have coached their kids for many years. It's truly addictive. And as addictions go, this one is great! You'll get to bond with your kids AND their friends and gain a little insight into their world. They'll get to know you differently too, as you become more than a parent.
The club provides a wide array of resources to ensure that as a coach, you and your players will have what they need to fashion a wonderful experience. Be forewarned though, once you're gang tackled by a bunch of 9 year olds who just won a big game, you'll be hooked.
To get hooked, you need to register your player with the club's recreational season and then submit, via online survey, your information for coaching. Team up with another parent and form a head coach/assistant coach pair (or the club can help find you an assistant) and we'll take it from there. In May, our Age Group Commissioners, AGCs, form teams around coaches, their kids and their kid's friends. Before the close of school, notifications will go out from the AGCs informing the coaches of their team rosters and important dates. The most important date will be June 7th for the 2009 season as this will be the mandatory coaches meeting, at which all coaches will choose their practice times and locations, and general information about the upcoming fall season will be laid out. Then, summer break. Once tan, rested and ready, the practice fields will open up for you and your young soccer stars in late August. A couple of weeks of practice and then your first gameday!
It won't be as world-changing as a wedding, or as nerve-wracking as finals from years ago, nor will it be as gratifying as landing that huge deal at work ... it'll be all that and more gazing up at you, the coach, from behind young eyes. And you're hooked. And as a soccer club, we couldn't be happier.
Thanks for considering volunteer coaching and if you wish to get going, sign up via the link at the club's homepage.
