COMPETITIVE TRYOUTS & SPRING PROGRAMS |
Competitive Tryouts and Spring Programs
by Scott Halsted
The first three weekends of March were very busy with tryouts for the
U10-U14’s. We saw a record number of players turnout this year. Some of
this increase in participation can be attributed to the various programs
that the Club runs to encourage players to maintain their soccer skills
in the off-season. For example, the Winter Skills program, Ski Week
training, Pre-Tryout sessions, and the U9 Academy.
The Club was able to form teams at all age levels (U10 – U13), both
Select and Upperhouse. (At U14 Select players play in the Marin FC.)
This is encouraging and is the first time we have been able to offer
both Select and Upperhouse at all these age levels.
In addition, the U9 Academy is off to a strong start with over 60
players participating in this program.
For those of you who have been in the Competitive program before, you
will notice a change in team training this Spring. This year, U10 – U14
teams will all train as a group. Boys are on Monday and Wednesday at
Hauke and Girls are Tuesdays and Thursdays. The players are further
divided by age and ability.
This format is proving to be an excellent format for player development.
In years past, each team has run their own training, and with only 14-18
players on a team, many of whom are playing other sports, often a
session would only have 6-8 players. This new format means that the
coaches have more players on the field and can run more productive – and
fun – sessions. As always, participation in all the Spring programs is
optional.
Finally, a reminder that U15 – U19 tryouts begin April 21/22 for Marin
FC and April 27/29 for Mill Valley Upperhouse.
