Mill Valley Boys Capture Norcal State Cup
Championship
In a thrilling test of endurance and nerves, the Mill Valley boys’ U-10
select soccer team won the Norcal State Cup bronze division championship
Nov. 17-18 in Manteca.
Fifty-six teams from throughout Northern California participated in
seven levels of competition. Following six grueling games over two days,
the Mill Valley Fusion squad captured the championship trophy in the
bronze division.
The Fusion team fought back three times from deficits in the Sunday
championship game against Concord. As darkness descended, and with time
running out in regulation play, Parker Laret scored on a free kick to
tie the game 3-3 and send it into overtime.
The teams then played two five-minute sudden-death overtime periods,
with neither side breaking through. The battle was finally decided on
best-of-five penalty kicks. Fusion scored on their first four kicks. The
Concord boys sailed their first kick wide left; their third kick was
blocked by Fusion goalie Oliver Krill, who saved the game. Fusion won
the penalty kick-off 4-2, eliminating the need for the fifth kick.
Fusion’s balanced attack included goals by 9 of the 12 team members.
Tyler Peck led the weekend scoring with five goals; Metincan Esrefoglu
had four; Rory Grant, Misha Krivoruchko, Oliver Krill and Bowen Kane
scored three each; and Henry Woodward, Parker Laret and Willzie Connelly
each contributed one. Ryan Leake and Callahan McKinley sparkled on
defense, while Matt Coopersmith led the team in assists.
