2008 FUTSAL INDOOR SOCCER

MARIN “FUTSAL” INDOOR SOCCER 2008
WINTER LEAGUE
October 15, 2007

DOWNLOADABLE FORM

The Marin Futsal League is currently making preparations for the start of its 13th season. During the first twelve seasons, over 8000 local kids took part in Futsal. Futsal is the official indoor sport of FIFA (soccer’s governing body). Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced sport that has skill development designed right into it. With Futsal a player can’t help but improve their passing, shooting, dribbling, defending, and overall team skills. People are always amazed at the great ball handling skills that the top South American players display and often wonder where they learned it! The answer is simple – they all played Futsal while growing up.

While Futsal was once South America’s best-kept secret, it is now a full-blown international sport with some 120 countries playing it worldwide. The sport has already had four FIFA sponsored World Championships. Futsal will also become part of the Olympic family during the next games. In the United States, Futsal is a rapidly growing sport, where some 42 states are affiliated to the United States Futsal Federation. In California there is a thriving Futsal population that is headed by the California State Futsal Association. The larger Futsal leagues are situated in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Cotati, Rohnert Park, Berkeley, and San Francisco.

Futsal works hand-in-hand with the outdoor game by helping to develop and polish a player’s individual and team skills. Futsal is played with a special low-bounce ball, necessitating players to use their skills, rather than
the ball’s bounce to propel it. In traveling around the country conducting clinics and preaching the virtues of Futsal, I am constantly overwhelmed at the reaction of coaches to Futsal. They all concur that after a winter of Futsal, the individual and team skills of their players are vastly improved. It’s a great game for anyone who wants to improve his or her skills. It helps the recreational and competitive player alike.

As a member of US Soccer’s National Coaching Committee, I have often listened to many National Team Coaches including Steve Sampson, the former Men’s National Team Coach, explain how important the use of 4v4 training is for the overall skill development of our youth. Well, Futsal is exactly that! 4v4 plus a goalkeeper.

The Marin Futsal League will start on the weekend of January 5/6, 2008, and run through March. The games will be held at various facilities throughout Marin. The games will be played on Saturday or Sunday. The program is offered to U-7, U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16, U-19 (boys and girls) teams, and this year an open adult league. Players are eligible to play in the same age group category as they did during this past outdoor season. There are two divisions: Competitive and Recreational. The cost will be $145/player or $1,300 for teams of 10 or more players. It is recommended that teams register a maximum of 10 players. The cost includes medical insurance and affiliation to US Futsal.

As the league will be affiliated to the California State Futsal Association, State and National Federation personnel will conduct a coaching clinic for all participating teams. The top two teams in the U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16, U-19, and Adult categories will be eligible to take part in the State Futsal Championship and the National Championship.

This season as an added treat, selected teams will participate in inter-league matches with teams from the East Bay, Santa Rosa, and San Francisco. This should be an exciting addition to the league, as it will match our best teams against the best the East Bay, Santa Rosa, and San Francisco have to offer.

For those teams interested in becoming part of the future by joining the Marin Futsal League, please call (415) 381-2391. Deadline for joining is December 1, 2007.
