A moving and inspirational success tale, “RISE & SHINE: THE JAY DEMERIT STORY” was co-directed by filmmakers Ranko Tutulugdzija and Nick Lewis of Truth2Life Productions. The documentary follows DeMerit’s heart-tugging transition from undrafted high school and collegiate soccer player to lauded professional and internationally respected soccer star.

The 92-minute film traces the Green Bay, Wisc.-native’s journey from failed tryouts with Major League Soccer through early frustrations in English football’s lowest divisions. In an inspiring tale, DeMerit ultimately triumphs in soccer glory becoming a captain for England’s Watford FC and joining Team USA as a hard-charging center halfback at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

A captivating tale told through interviews with DeMerit’s coaches, fellow players, family and friends, “RISE & SHINE” features game footage from competitions around the world including cameos by soccer greats such as Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba and Landon Donovan. DeMerit – whose exploits in England included scoring the so-called “£40 million goal” that helped promote Watford into the lucrative Premier League – hopes to encourage aspiring athletes and others.

As unique as the story is the way the film was financed. Tutulugdzija and Lewis built a huge groundswell and raised funds through the grassroots crowd-sourcing organization Kickstarter (www.kickstarter.com). Kickstarter is an online fundraiser for musicians, artists, filmmakers and others to fund projects via donations and participation from the public. “

“The response has been amazing,” says DeMerit, who today captains MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps. “The all-ins are mind-blowing. We have a kid down in Texas named Evan who’s battling cancer for the third time, he’s had open-heart surgery, and all he wants to do is be a soccer player. He’s raised $1,500 going door-to-door, running screenings. It keeps his mind off his sickness.”

Contributions came mostly from soccer fans and the public at large but also athletes and celebrities such as U.S. National Team member Stuart Holden, Rivers Cuomo of the band Weezer and Seth Meyers of “Saturday Night Live.”

“To have people reach out and volunteer their time and creativity has been something we didn’t expect,” Lewis says. “It really is a testament to Jay’s story. This film is not just for those who love soccer but for anyone who has a dream.”

IMPORTANT POLICY CHANGE:  Our reg fees remain unchanged for the third year in a row, but MVSC will charge all families the $50 Volunteer fee at the point of registration, and then issue a refund of $50 at the end of the fall season to any family that has fulfilled one of MVSC’s designated volunteer opportunities.

MVSC is always interested in talking to parents willing to commit to the spirit of improvement that our club strives for.  Whether you have children in our recreational or competitive program, we are interested in parents who will consider the needs of each individual, but also dedicate themselves to the management and improvement of our club as a whole.  Whether on a committee or on the Board, we generally ask for a 2-3 year commitment, with the knowledge that time requirements vary for each role within the club.

MVSC strongly recommends pre-registering, as it will facilitate your check-in process at the tryouts, and streamline team registration.  You will be able to pre-register up until noon on Friday, April 27th, 2012.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

• Please check www.mvsc.org on the morning of any tryout date for possible cancelation/rescheduling due to inclement weather.  However, most tryouts will be conducted on all-weather fields, so cancellations would only occur in the event of dangerous conditions (except for tryouts being held at Bayfront Park).
  
• For players who do not pre-register, Medical Releases signed by parent are required.  No medical release, no tryouts.
  
• Players must wear: cleats, shinguards, and a white t-shirt or sweatshirt.  Players will not be permitted to wear a competitive team uniform at tryouts.
• Players are recommended to attend all three tryouts.  Players must attend at least one tryout for consideration on a competitive team.
• Players who are sick or injured should contact the team’s coach via e-mail in advance of the tryout.
• Parents are permitted to watch from the bleachers or outside the fenced area, but are not allowed on the practice field at any time.
