Competitive Tryouts Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need
to bring to tryouts?
Players should
arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time to register and warm
up. Each child must have a signed medical release signed by his/her
parent or guardian. These forms will be available at check-in and will
be part of the registration process.
Players should
wear a WHITE shirt, cleats, shin guards, and bring a water bottle. Club
uniforms or any type of clothing indicating team or club affiliation are
not allowed. Parents are not permitted on the playing field during
tryouts. There is no cost to tryout.
Should my
son/daughter tryout for Select or Upperhouse?
Most age groups
will have both a Class I team (Select) and a Class III team (Upperhouse).
Tryouts will be held for both teams at the same time and at the same field.
Your son or daughter should initially select the team for which he/she would
like to play. The coaches will make adjustments after the first and second
tryouts. If the coaches feel that a player at the Upperhouse tryout should
move to the Select tryout that player will receive a phone call and an
invitation to move up. Similarly, if the coaches feel that a player at the
Select tryout should move to the Upperhouse tryout they will encourage
him/her to do so.
What age group
should my son/daughter tryout for?
U10: Born
after August 1, 1997
U11: Born
between August 1, 1996 and July 31, 1997
U12: Born
between August 1, 1995 and July 31, 1996
U13: Born
between August 1, 1994 and July 31, 1995
U14: Born
between August 1, 1993 and July 31, 1994
Can my
son/daughter play with a team that is older than his/her age group?
In most cases,
players will not be allowed to play up on Class III teams (there may be some
exceptions, which will need to be approved by MVSC’s Director of Coaching).
Exceptionally talented players will be allowed to play up on older Class I
teams if they demonstrate the ability to be impact players on the older
teams they’re trying out for. All play ups must be approved by MVSC’s
Director of Coaching.
How many players will be selected for each team?
At age U-10 there will be approximately 12 players per team.
At ages U-11 and above there will typically be 14-17 players per team.
When will we
find out whether my son/daughter has made the team?
Following the
first two tryouts, there will be an initial cut. Attendance at the
third tryout will be by invitation only.
Following the second tryout, a list of players who are invited to attend the
third tryout will be posted on the MVSC website (www.MVSC.org).
Every player who
attends a third tryout will be notified by a phone call within 3 days of the
final tryout as to whether or not they make a competitive team. Every player
will receive a call whether they make the team or not. Final rosters will be
posted on the MVSC website NO EARLIER than 6pm Wednesday following
the last tryout.
If my
son/daughter is selected, when do we have to commit to the team?
Within one week
of the final roster being posted on the MVSC website, a meeting will be held
to complete the player registration form, pay the MVSC registration fee, and
some teams may collect an initial payment for the team account. Attendance
at this meeting is mandatory in order to secure a place on the team.
If my
son/daughter does not make the team can we get feedback on how to improve
his/her chances next year?
Yes, if your
son/daughter does not make a team you may email the coach and ask for
feedback on how to improve his/her chances next year. Coach email addresses
are provided on the MVSC website.
What if my
son/daughter cannot make all the tryouts?
The more tryouts
a player can attend, the greater opportunity they have to exhibit their
skills. All players are expected to make at least two tryouts, and a player
must attend at least one tryout to be considered for the team. Remember,
attendance at the third tryout is by invitation only so it is
important to make the first two tryouts.
What if my
son/daughter is sick or injured during tryouts?
If your
son/daughter is sick or injured you should contact the appropriate coach.
Coach and teams assignments are on the MVSC website along with email
addresses for the coaches.
Will there be
more than one team selected?
MVSC’s goal is
that every child has the opportunity to play soccer at the level that is
most appropriate for him/her to inspire confidence, build skills, and
develop knowledge of the game. Provided there are enough players with the
appropriate skill level, there will be one Select team at each age group,
but no more than one Select team. There may be more than one Upperhouse
team at certain age levels if there are enough qualified players.
Who will coach
my son/daughter?
A list of coaches
and their teams is available on the MVSC website.
Will my son/daughter’s coach coach more than one team?
Yes, it is possible that your son /daughter’s coach will be
coaching more than one team. This may create some conflicts, however, in
order to attract high caliber coaches to our program it is necessary that
these coaches be compensated in a way that is competitive with other
programs in the Bay Area. One way of helping with compensation is
permitting coaches to coach more than one team.
At the same time,
it is very important that any potential conflicts be addressed. For this
reason, each coach must commit to attend at least two practices per team per
week. In addition, any conflicts regarding games and tournaments must be
resolved and approved by the team managers.
What is the
time commitment expected in order to play on a competitive team?
Select and
Upperhouse are competitive programs, and teams in both programs travel to
tournaments and league games throughout the Bay Area and Northern
California. Players are expected to attend mandatory camps and practices
starting August 1st. The league season begins in September and
ends in mid-November. State Cup for Select and Association Cup for
Upperhouse, is during January and February for teams older than U-10.
Non-mandatory,
pre-season practices will begin in the spring, and some Select teams may
participate in non-mandatory spring competitions. The MVSC supports players
who are committed to other spring sports, but provides these spring
opportunities for those interested.
Some travel will
be involved. During league play half of the games will be at home and the
majority of the away games will be in Marin and Sonoma counties. There will
be 2-4 tournaments/jamborees that may require travel outside of Marin and
Sonoma counties.
What is the
cost of playing on a competitive team?
Parents are
called upon to pay for uniforms, tournament fees, training camps, traveling
expenses, trainer, and coach costs for the team. These fees vary, but you
should expect pay approximately $1,200 - $1,400. A limited number of
needs-based scholarships are available. For information contact Sandy Murray
(smurray@bpmllp.com).
What if it is
raining the day of tryouts?
Tam High, Hall
Middle and Redwood High fields are all-weather and
tryouts will take place rain or shine.
