The
entire team traveled to the Hanford State Cup venue by Amtrak for
the 450+ mile RT January 19-20th. Arriving refreshed, the
Mill Valley Rockers went undefeated tying 0-0 the Central Valley
Explosion (Santa Clara) and defeating 2-1 the Valley CU Xtreme
Heat (Fresno) on Saturday and then tying 0-0 the Walnut Creek
Stampede Sunday.
Against the Central Valley Explosion--who eventually won the
flight--the Rockers were very aggressive offensively with attacks by
forward Shannon Costello and wing Anna Jenkins; wing
Cassie Chuljian hit the pole with a strong strike that could have
made a difference in the weekend’s outcome.
The
Rockers dominated the Valley CU Xtreme Heat by keeping the ball
on offensive primarily, although the Heat drew blood first
breaking through the normally solid defense and striking a well-placed
goal in the side net. Not discouraged, the Rockers quickly struck back
with great passes and teamwork led by forward Yasmine Bakhtiari
and wing Candy Janachowski with attacking mid Chace
Schornstein hitting the net to tie the score. Shortly thereafter,
another string of team passes allowed forward Rachael Ferm to
place the game winning goal.
Due
to illness, forward and back Rachael Ferroni joined the team
Sunday and contributed spiritedly on both ends of the field against the
Walnut Creek Stampede. The Stampede previously dominated
the Rockers twice earlier in the season; this time however, the Rockers
played evenly the entire game.
The
Rockers allowed only one goal the whole weekend with defensive mid
Chloe Hoeber attacking the ball furiously and backs Stasha
Anderson, Austen Caproni and Elise Ferguson (who also
played forward) playing their best games this year. Keeper Elizabeth
Archer played extremely well in all three games with good kicking
and multiple key saves and sweeper Alissa Huntington was superb
with several amazing last second critical deflections against
attackers. Defensive mid Annie Ganz was injured and unable to
make the trip.
While the Rockers
struggled during the regular season, great credit goes to their coach
Mattias Kodzoman who made the Rockers very competitive in the last
few months and completed their season with a very memorable weekend
